Designing a safe & reliable fighter aircraft and meeting the performance not only in the present scenario but futuristic requirement too, is a challenging task for aircraft designers. LCA-Tejas is one such aircraft, which is indigenously designed and developed with cutting edge and state-of-the-art technologies. Some of these technologies are quadruplex digital fly-by-wire control system, OAC based avionics, Glass cockpit, Composite structure, robust and reliable mechanical system etc. The certification of aircraft with such technologies is equally challenging and complex process for certification authority.
With proactive participation of certification agency, LCA has successfully demonstrated its capability on 11 prototypes vehicle with 1500 plus flights under various conditions and envelopes. In addition, LCA has also demonstrated the store management capability with safe separation and with considerable accuracy of important weapons such as R-73 CCM, 1000lb, 25lb, 3kg bombs.
Having assessed its capability through design analysis, ground testing and successful flight demonstration, the LCA has been considered matured enough to be inducted into the services for operational role.
LCA has been categorized into 17 systems covering 346 LRUs ( Line Replaceable Units ) to facilitate the certification process . CEMILAC, a certification authority has played a key-role in defining the methodology to be followed for certifying such complex flying machine along with its systems, their associated software and preparation of detailed documentation towards certification. Having satisfied with the complete process followed for certification and satisfactory result of 1500 plus successful flights, CEMILAC with the association of ADA and HAL has accorded Initial Operation Clearance and issued the Release to Service Document, which authorizes squadron pilots to fly this aircraft.
This lecture brings out the detailed procedure and methodology followed in the form of journey with the sense of responsibility during certification of this state-of-the-art technology aircraft.
