The Technical Award is presented for a significant accomplishment in developing or using technology that is required for missile systems. The candidate must have demonstrated expertise in aerodynamics, guidance, thermophysics, navigation, control, propulsion, or other fundamental technical disciplines that has led to substantial improvement in missile systems. The Technical and Management award are presently alternatively at the biannual Missile Sciences Conference. Thus, the awards are presented once every four years. The 2008 Technical Award winner was Ernest Ohlmeyer. The award is administred by the AIAA Missile Systems Technical Committee.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, under the G. N. U. Modarelli simplified the seal, leaving only the white stars and orbital path on a round field of blue with a red vector. Then he added white N-A-S-A lettering.

In the NASA insignia design, the sphere represents a planet, the stars represent space, the red chevron, in the alternate shape of the constellation Andromeda, is a wing representing aeronautics (the latest design in hypersonic wings at the time the logo was developed). Then there is the orbiting spacecraft going around the wing. Although known officially as the insignia, NASA’s round logo was nicknamed the “meatball”. In 1975, NASA decided a more modern logo was in order and switched to the NASA logotype, nicknamed the “worm,” a red, stylized rendering of the letters N-A-S-A. The insignia is made up of only 2 colors, red (Pantone PMS185, or HTML #EF3D42 ) and blue (Pantone PMS286, or HTML #0060A9).

The NASA logotype (”worm”) was retired from official in 1992. The design is used only for special occasions and commercial merchandising purposes approved by the Visual I<div

It is used in more formal traditional and ceremonial events such as award presentations and press conferences. According to NASA Headquarters, the seal should never be used with the NASA insignia, since the two elements are intended for different purposes and are visually incompatible when seen side by side.

Like most images produced by the United States Government, the “meatball” insignia, the “worm” logo and the NASA seal are in the public domain. However, their usage is restricted under Code of Federal Regulations 14 CFR 1221.
