/>Anything to do with space and air travel fascinates us all. The possibility of new planets, suns and stars, not to mention the possibility of new life forms, keeps even the most sceptical of us interested in information about the aerospace industry. The business of space research and development has come a long way since the first man on the moon and is continuing to develop and grow, with innovative new space programmes and new technologies promising to get us further into space than ever before. This growing industry covers all aspects of aircraft and spacecraft research and development which is a vital part of the UK&#8217;s economy. Over the past 20 years the nature of the aerospace business has changed dramatically bringing with it its own problems and rewards.</p><p>Money and investment seems to be one of the biggest factors the aerospace business faces. Research, equipment and specialist man power have all pushed space exploration prices sky high, making it a costly industry for every government in the world. President Obama&#8217;s decision to scrap funding for NASA&#8217;s American moon base project has consequently thrown open the space challenge to the private aerospace businesses as the American government has decided to focus government spending on encouraging the private sector to take the lead. Many other countries are following suit giving everyone new hope and opportunities within the entire aerospace sector.</p><p>This new opportunity is great news for space fans everywhere as dedicated explorers and business moguls are all vying to get in on the action. According to the Confederation of Indian industry and Pricewaterhouse Coopers, India has the fastest growing aerospace business in the world. India&#8217;s expert workforce and position in the centre of South East Asia makes it the ideal place for research, manufacturing and maintenance work. New investments as well as low manufacturing and workforce costs are quickly catapulting India into one of the world&#8217;s most important aerospace development centres and it is thought that India along with China will be the top places of business development in the aerospace sector in the next few years.</p><p>The aerospace industry strongly depends on a variety of space mavericks that push for the next big exploration or invention to take them further into space and gather better research on some of our most famous planets. Twenty-two million passengers passed through Scotland&#8217;s four major airports in 2005, and with an annual turnover of £2.1 billion, the industry is still on the rise as a major sector of employment.</p><p>With Scottish aerospace accounting for 10% of the UK&#8217;s industry, the country is also home to some of the largest and fastest growing airports in the British Isles, as well as boasting success in other areas, with the world&#8217;s busiest heliport at Aberdeen Airport having been vital for the oil industry.</p><p>Ever since the Wright brothers made their pivotal flight and modern aviation was born, Scotland has been involved every step of the way. </script></div><p>The aerospace industry is bouncing back according to a report by A|D|S &#8211; the Aerospace, Defense and Security trade organization &#8211; published today.</p><p>The report shows that revenues for the UK aerospace industry swelled 5.4 percent in 2009 to a combined £22.2 billion.</p><p>It comes after last month&#8217;s encouraging Farnborough Air Show, which was the second most successful show ever for new aircraft orders. The largest single order at Farnborough was from General Electric&#8217;s leasing company for 60 aircraft from the Airbus A320 family at $4.9 billion.</p><p>Graham Chisnall, Managing Director, Commercial Aerospace and Operations at A|D|S, said: &#8220;The aerospace sector in the UK is in a strong position. It is number one in Europe and second only to the U.S. globally, employing over 100,000 people across the country and with a turnover in 2009 of £22.2 billion. The strong orders at Farnborough and the optimism of the industry around the Airshow reflects the fact that, despite pressures on the defense budget, the industry is on the up, especially in the UK, buoyed by the recovery of the civil sector.</p><p>&#8220;This position of British success has been achieved through a combination of factors such as a strong UK presence by major multinational companies, the agility of the sector that in large part is delivered by innovative small and medium sized businesses in the global aerospace supply chain, farsighted historical investment in technology by both industry and Government alongside strong performance in export markets. Rutile and ilmenite, the two primary minerals which contain titanium, make up 24% of the earth&#8217;s crust, thus making titanium the ninth most abundant element on the planet. Despite this prominence, the process of transforming this element into a usable form is time consuming and costly. Being such a dynamic metal however, this expense is offset by the increase in material performance.<br/><br/> <br/><br/>Titanium is often specified for aircraft applications because of its incredible strength and low density. Titanium is equal in strength to steel, at only 56% the weight. Furthermore, producing structures out of titanium requires far less material than, for example, using a substitute material such as stainless steel. Aircraft grade Titanium has the capability of withstanding relatively high temperatures, resisting corrosion, cracking and fatigue.<br/><br/> <br/><br/>Aircraft Grade Titanium<br/><br/> <br/><br/>Titanium 6AL-4V and 3AL-2.5V are two alloys that qualify as aircraft grade. 6AL-4V alloy consists of 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, and 4% vanadium. The SBAC conducts an annual survey assessing a variety of factors in the aerospace industry, including employment numbers, company orders, and wages. For our purposes, looking at a few of the sections on employment will help give a better picture about the job market for aerospace professionals.</p><p>The latest survey by SBAC is for the 2005 year, since the newest report won’t be available for a few months. The aerospace industry in the United Kingdom is one of the strongest in Europe, with 26 percent of aerospace jobs in Europe in the UK. However, the United Kingdom is experiencing competition from France, the home of the European Space Agency, which accounts for almost 25 percent of European aerospace jobs. The British aerospace industry employs about 125,000 professionals, with nearly 160,000 peripheral jobs supported by the industry. In raw numbers, the British aerospace industry is one of the strongest in the world.</p><p>There is another section of the report that should be of interest to British aerospace professionals. Employment in the industry went up nine percent in 2005, while sales in the aerospace industry incre<div

In his book &#8220;Poor Richard&#8217;s Almanack&#8221;, Benjamin Franklin wrote &#8220;He that idly loses 5s. [shillings] worth of time, loses 5s., and might as prudently throw 5s. into the river.&#8221; If I read this right what he meant was &#8220;if you don&#8217;t need it, don&#8217;t waste your money on it.&#8221;<br/><br/>While it was Henry Ford who took the concept of waste reduction into the manufacturing floor, it was Toyota that concretized the practice into what we now call lean concepts.<br/><br/>Lean manufacturing processes have revolutionized the way many leading enterprises deliver products to their customers and manage their supplier relationships. Over the past few years, the use of Lean techniques has expanded well beyond the automotive industry to delivering dramatic results in other sectors, including aerospace, consumer goods, and industrial equipment, among others.<br/><br/>According to AberdeenGroup, Lean concepts have helped manufacturers streamline processes and reduce cycle times in complex manufacturing and supply chain environments. For example, when applied to product development these same concepts result in increased productivity and potentially the ability to develop more profitable products.<br/><br/>In &#8220;The Lean Benchmark Report, Closing the Reality Gap,&#8221; Jane Biddle, Vice President of Manufacturing Research, AberdeenGroup, notes that although C-level executives are enthusiastic about the benefits that can be derived from &#8220;Leaning out<div

A large performance gap exists between those companies that are simply using Lean techniques on the shop floor versus those that have built a culture based on Lean thinking.<br/><br/>Lean manufacturing is nothing new. Some of the best run manufacturing businesses in Asia have deployed Lean manufacturing to streamline operations, reduce cost and increase operational efficiency.<br/><br/>Asia awareness levels<br/><br/>Just how familiar are manufacturers with regards to Lean concepts? Large manufacturers with multiple operations spread across different countries understand the concepts well and are in various stages of implementation (bear in mind that in the case of Toyota, adoption of lean concepts is an in-going process).<br/><br/>Ronald Li, Director of Industry and Product Marketing at Infor, says that the level of understanding of what constitutes &#8220;Lean&#8221; in a manufacturing sense varies by country as well as by type of industry. &#8220;Across Asia, companies that have taken the road to &#8216;lean&#8217; are more likely to pursue this strategy to achieve departmental improvements. In mature countries such as Japan, manufacturers have been practicing lean for many years, especially on the manufacturing floor.<br/><br/>Paul Liddiatt, APAC Program Director for Oracle Commercial Applications concurs and adds his thoughts: &#8220;The application of Lean manufacturing principles to the entire supply chain is now being seen as the imperative in order to deliver the responsiveness customers require while still keeping a tight reign on costs. Once Lean manufacturing techniques are understood they are seen as the key to eliminating waste in all its forms from the supply chain. Without the burden of waste, the supply chain delivers significant competitive advantage.&#8221;<br/><br/>Methodologies vary<br/><br/>As something based on common sense, Lean implementations can come in the form of pencil and paper or entries in a spreadsheet. While workable, these are neither scalable nor sustainable. Companies that have progressed far advanced in implementing lean are likely to depend on systems that take a more holistic approach to support lean deployments.<br/><br/>As companies begin to extend Lean concepts across departments, integrated business applications suites are being seen as helping them to manage information more efficiently.<br/><br/>&#8220;These applications rely on a single, integrated source of data to connect disparate business processes, not just within the company and its factory but also throughout its entire supply chain. This may comprise multiple contract manufacturers. When users make a change to one application, every other application is notified, initiating related workflow processes automatically,&#8221; said Liddiatt.<br/><br/>ERP vendors have also introduced &#8220;enablers&#8221; that adapt their applications to a Lean environment, with inherent support for Kanban control, product configurators, and just-in-time materials procurement. This level of integration allows companies to compress the manufacturing process and streamline production, reducing the time for the whole order-to-delivery cycle.<br/><br/>Liddiatt cautions that ERP applications are just management tools that support the operations of a manufacturing plant. An ERP package helps users use information more wisely, eliminate non-value-adding activities and streamline core business processes. &#8220;To successfully implement Lean manufacturing concepts, appropriate training and resources need to be invested so users embrace the principles of Lean,&#8221; adds Liddiatt.<br/><br/>Lean initiatives, fat benefits<br/><br/>At the end of the day, companies deploy Lean initiatives because they want to save money. Call it &#8216;cost cutting&#8217; or &#8216;waste elimination&#8217; or &#8216;saving pennies&#8217; the end goal is the same: eliminate what is not necessary to get the job done and deliver the promised goods.<br/><br/>Biddle surmises that for companies willing to make the commitment, Lean pays dividends in both the short and long term. Successful Lean implementations have met and exceeded the performance expectations of 80 percent of best-in-class companies in areas such as customer service and supply chain flexibility.<br/><br/>&#8220;In many cases, technology solutions are enabling best-in-class companies to outperform their competitors by continuously measuring, monitoring, and responding to key production metrics in real-time. Additionally, ERP, Lean Specialty/MES, and homegrown solutions provide the foundation from which companies are enshrining value streams, improving productivity, preparing for new product launches, and driving culture change throughout the company and supplier base,&#8221; adds Biddle.<br/><br/>Role of technology<br/><br/>Many Lean initiatives start on paper. Over time these &#8220;technology-less&#8221; implementations become impractical for a number of reasons. According to Biddle, customer expectations continue to escalate, driving the need for additional variations to existing products, faster launches for new products, and decreased order cycle times; this requires increased flexibility in existing plants, with suppliers, and across the supply chain.<br/><br/>Pricing pressures have driven many manufacturers to outsource production, which has resulted in a lack of visibility into foreign operations; this is driving the need for web-based solutions that enable decision makers to see and control key operations remotely.<br/><br/>Finally, leading companies are scaling and extending their Lean processes beyond a single plant to encompass supply chain partner processes; this is driving the need for a technology infrastructure that facilitates the design and implementation of customer-focused business processes.<br/><br/>Lean technology solutions can provide a solid foundation from which manufacturers can manage Lean transactions across core value streams that extend from the customer, through production, and back to the supplier.<br/><br/>Lean solutions should support Toyota Production Systems (not because you work for Toyota) by dynamically managing key control points, scheduling and tracking critical resources, and promoting continuous improvement programs. In addition to managing transactions, solution technologies should facilitate the capture of standardized processes and value stream operating models.<br/><br/>Finally, Lean solutions should support the principles espoused in the &#8216;Toyota Way&#8217; by embracing common language, promoting a shared understanding, providing tools that enable collaboration, and institutionalizing a culture of Lean for the long term.<br/><br/>Lean challenges persists<br/><br/>AberdeenGroup warns that for any manufacturer, transitioning from a traditional to a Lean manufacturing environment is a major change for many reasons. A significant cultural change needs to happen. It may be business as usual but certainly the way to go about business as usual will not be the same. People need to be willing to change the way they do things and that process of change is where much of the challenge lies.<br/><br/>Another challenge will be a persistent and firm commitment from senior management. Lean will mean a company&#8217;s long-term vision and senior management must not be distracted by short-term concerns when Lean initiatives are concerned.<br/><br/>Lean manufacturing goes against the grain of many manufacturing traditions. The old measures of success of efficiency and utilization need to be replaced with agility, lead-time, inventory turns and quality across the board.<br/><br/>Liddiatt warns that an upheaval inherent in Lean programs means that the engagement of senior management is required for successful implementation. &#8220;A top-down approach is necessary for adequate resources to be allocated to train employees and change the thinking within the company, and resolve is also necessary to push through reorganization in production processes and inventory management,&#8221; adds Liddiatt.<br/><br/>Beyond integrating legacy systems with the new Lean initiative is the necessity of integrating external partners and suppliers into the Lean program.<br/><br/>&#8220;Meeting customer requirements for just-in-time deliveries requires the support and cooperation of not only finance and logistics, but also the suppliers who provide the raw materials, components, and assemblies that are used early in the manufacturing process,&#8221; Biddle says.<br/><br/>Liddiatt agrees and adds that as Lean principles take hold, innovative companies will realize that they need to involve their suppliers and even their customers to achieve continuous improvement. &#8220;Suppliers should be considered an extension of the company, and the most successful lean companies involve their suppliers in product design in order to improve quality and simplify manufacturing. They work together to improve communication methods and shorten lead times throughout the supply chain,&#8221; says Liddiatt.<br/><br/>Manufacturers are constantly on the prowl to weed out waste and inactivity. As Toyota has shown, this is a continuous process with benefits trickling right across the operation. </script></div><p>A recent example of a company releasing a new material that fits the bill for environmentally-responsible</p><p>products to use in home construction, is Cosentino.</p><p>It has taken Cosentino a great investment in time and money, but finally they have come up with a recycled</p><p>counter top material for use in kitchen and bathrooms. The counter top is called &#8216;Eco&#8217; and has recently been</p><p>launched. Cosentino is the largest manufacturer of quartz in the world and one of the largest natural stone</p><p>importers. Eco is made up of 75% recycled consumer and industrial raw materials and 25% natural elements. It</p><p>looks very like an engineered stone or solid surface material, and is available in 10 colors at the moment.</p><p>The company says that it has performed well in tests for scorching, staining and scratching resistance. The</p><p>actual recycled materials include mirrors, windows and bottled glass, granulated glass from consumer recycling</p><p>practices, porcelain from domestic products such as tiles, sinks and toilets, stone scrap from quarries and</p><p>mountains and fabrication, furnace residuals (ash) from factories and a bonding agent containing 22% corn oil</p><p>resin, also the result of research into eco-friendly resin. Many designers, architects and consumers will be</p><p>excited about using this revolutionary material that meets the challenge to produce environmentally responsible</p><p>materials for construction. By &#8220;upcycling&#8221; these products, the company is using materials at the end of their</p> <<div

Re-using the projected amount of glass bottles every</p><p>year, for example, means that landfill space will be significantly reduced. The surface is hard, durable and</p><p>non-porous and doesn&#8217;t require sealers. A matte leather texture as well as a polished texture is available. Eco</p><p>comes in slabs and tiles. It can be used commercially and providentially. Eco is a beautiful looking counter top</p><p> that has the added bonus of minimizing our carbon footprint.</p><p>Another green material for counter tops is &#8220;Vertazzo&#8221;, an attractive solid terrazzo counter top made from recycled glass and cast concrete. It is durable and tough as granite, but not as porous as marble. Now a designer choice, vertazzo is very beautiful&#8230; the polished glass looks extraordinary in the concrete, picking out colors in the rest of your kitchen in a subtle and luxurious way. This material gives off no odors or fumes and there are any number of finishes. What makes it green? Terrazzo is an aggregate of glass, stone and binders and several companies use high amounts of recycled glass, up to 100%. The recycled content diverts glass from landfills which is a tremendous benefit to the environment. Some terrazzo is made with concrete making the indoor applications extremely benign in regard to indoor air quality.</p><p>Shetkastone has produced a material from pre and post consumer waste paper, cloth fibers and paint. All</p><p>by-products can be recycled back into the manufacturing process. The &#8216;stone&#8217; looks just like natural stone and</p><p>comes in different colors. Best of all, it can be recycled again if it needs to be replaced. While it has the</p><p>look of stone, it can be cut and screwed like wood. It is water and stain resistant.</p><p>Eco top surfaces are a blend of bamboo fiber, and recycled wood fiber from demolition sites. Bamboo is a very</p><p>easily renewable source; it takes 3 to 6 years to regrow bamboo for harvesting. However, processing consumes a</p><p>lot of energy when the bamboo is converted to synthetic building materials such as laminated planking and</p><p>flooring. More importantly, because bamboo products are mainly from countries like China, they have to be</p><p>transported over great distances before reaching Western markets. The materials are bound by a water-based</p><p>resin formula. It is best not to have too near a wet area.</p><p>Alkemi is an innovative material being used in counter tops. It is made up of 2 materials&#8230;curled shavings</p><p>of aluminium from scrap (everything from aerospace to household appliances) and polymetric resin. This resin</p><p>is made of a material similar to polyester. Alkemi can be molded and joined as needed, and it is very durable.</p><p>The surface is unique and the coils of aluminium reflect light in a beautiful fashion. If you are tired of</p><p>granite&#8230;look at this.</p><p>Sqak Mountain Stone is another eco-friendly material that resembles soapstone or limestone. It is made of</p><p>recycled paper, recycled glass, coal fly-ash and cement. The material is hand cast into slabs. The look is</p><p>very natural, warm and solid.</p><p>Metal Tiles are sleek 100% recycled aluminium and give off a glint that reflects surrounding colors. The smooth</p><p>surface is an exciting contrast to the other textures around it in the kitchen. It is best used as an accent in</p><p>smaller amounts rather than a large expanse. Eleek&#8217;s aluminium tiles come in a few different metallic colors -</p><p>bronze, red, silver, black and rock.</p><p>Trinity Glass products are made from recycled glass and low-carbon cement. They are composite surfaces that look</p><p>like a very polished stone. Many colors are available.</p><p>Lithistone is made from natural sand and stone of different grades, recycled materials, organic mineral pigments</p><p> </p><p>and a natural mineral binder. It can be customized to meet almost any size, color, shape and textural</p><p>specifications. The way in which lithistone is created, is environmentally responsible.</p><p>Richlite makes paper based counter tops too. Made from environmentally sustainable sources, the company</p><p>manufactures attractive, durable, long-lasting materials. The fibrous materials made from paper-fiber</p><p>composites soaked in phenolic resin. The counter tops are as strong as stone, but, of course, not as heavy.</p><p>Richlite doesn&#8217;t release harmful gases into the air &#8211; it is Green Guard certified for Children &amp; Schools</p><p>(the highest possible rating) with no detectable level of off gassing.</p><p>Durapalm is harvested from coconut palms &#8211; this wood is slightly stronger than oak. Duraplam&#8217;s co-friendliness</p><p>rating is 100% as it is derived from old, non fruiting palms grown in plantations in many parts of the world.</p><p>Palms produce nuts for about 80 years and then are removed and replaced. Coconut palm wood can vary greatly in</p><p>color and density. Only the hard, dark palm is used for its beauty and durable surface.</p><p>Lumicor is very similar in construction to that of solid surface counter tops. Lumicor is made from clear resins</p><p>such as acrylic or PETG and is blended with core decorative materials. These core design elements can be metallic,</p><p> neutrals, botanicals, wood workings, color ways or embosses. Lumicor looks similar to glass and provides</p><p>exceptional clarity when used as counter tops. It is extremely durable, non porous and resistant to UV damage.</p><p>Scratches and stains can be easily removed using polishing discs. It is half the weight of glass counter tops</p><p>and can resist impact forces 42x greater than tempered glass. Lumicor can be manipulated with wood working tools</p><p>and is extremely versatile. It is available in a range of patterns and colors.</p><p>As most recycled glass counter tops are one piece and cut to order, they are extremely hygienic as they cannot</p><p> support food and dirt. There are no seams or joins. Glass is non-porous and relatively stain proof as well</p><p>as</p><p>being extremely heat resistant (up to 700 degrees). Glass counter tops are quite difficult to keep clean as</p><p>finger prints and moisture marks show easily if not dried off well. To maintain, just use a non abrasive cleaner</p><p>and polish regularly.</p><p>Still sold on stone? Natural stone, like granite, is beautiful and durable but a finite resource.
