I feel before one try to know, What is Vastushastra? It is very much important for us to properly understand, and to know, what exactly does it mean, by constructing a Vastu, according to the rules of Vastushastra!
When we construct a Vastu according to the rules of Vastushastra means, we confine a small part (or portion) of the surrounding environment and the nature, existing in the movable and immovable, animate and inanimate Universe, with the help of a ceiling and four walls! While doing so, if we could maintain the QUALITATIVE RESEMBLANCE in the basic properties of the five basic elements, eight directions, magnetic field force of the Earth, geographical conditions, topographical natural slopes, cavities beneath the Earth, atmospheric pressure created inside the Vastu, the gravitational force, sunlight, visible and invisible radiations emitted by the Sun and other planets of the Solar system, the magnetic waves prevailing in the surrounding environment and the nature of this movable and immovable, animate and inanimate Universe, AND THAT OF THE CONFINED PART OR PORTION (means the constructed Vastu!), then we can say that, the Vastu is been constructed, according to the rules of Vastushastra! In other words, Vastushastra means, a science dealing with the proper structural arrangement of a residing Vastu! (A dwelling place!)
Vastushastra is an experiential science! Vastushastra is a fundamental base of modern architectural science, which is based on the nature just like other sciences i.e. Geology, Physics, Astronomy, Chemistry, Biology etc. etc.! Vastushastra deals with each and every step, involved in the construction of a Vastu and also guides, every aspect right from the selection of the plot, till the house warming ceremony!
