History of thermographic technology

Infrared cameras were first used during the Korean War. The reason behind this was that they were extremely useful while fighting in the dark. These cameras work on the basis of heat detection and thus they would be used to identify the position of soldiers when they fought during the night. In those days, these devices were manufactured just for the armed forces.

Types of thermographic cameras

There are two types of thermographic gadgets: cooled or uncooled. The cooled detectors come in vacuum sealed cases. This is because the semiconductor materials like lead salenide, indium antimonide, and mercury cadmium telluride need to be cooled to extremely low temperatures in order to get proper images.

The uncooled imaging devices operate in normal temperatures. Pyroelectric and ferroelectric materials are used in this type of imaging equipment. They do not need any type of cooling therefore do not have vacuum sealed cases. This variety is more expensive than the cooled ones.
