More than 1200 miles of sandy beaches, adrenaline inducing theme parks and year round sunshine, the American state of Florida has something to offer literally everyone.

Whether it's freshwater, saltwater, or fly-casting, Florida is a top-notch destination to visit if fishing takes your fancy. Southwest Florida is the best spot to visit for fishing; it has some of the best backwater fishing in the state as well as an abundance of freshwater opportunities.

It would be impossible to mention Florida without referring to Disneyland, the state's most popular vacation destination. For a spot of fairytale living this is the place to visit and it proves popular with kids as well as grownups.

Orlando is best known as the home of Disneyland but there is much more besides. Universal Orlando is a popular destination resort with its own hotels and theme parks, Seaworld Orlando provides hours of entertainment and International Drive boasts more than 100 hotels and 150 restaurants.

Florida is an ideal place to get back to nature and its largest natural wonder, the Everglades, should be on your list if you are passionate about the great outdoors.

This is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States and is home to more than 300 species of birds, 11,000 plant varieties and unique wildlife.

Nature lovers will also appreciate the living reefs of the Florida Keys. More than 9000 pieces of living coral are situated in these waters alongside an accolade of brightly coloured sea creatures of various species, from Angelfish to Seahorses.

Heading north, sun worshippers will be right at home at Panama City Beach which overlooks the Gulf of Mexico and is a popular tourist location. With an annual average of 320 days sunshine this is the perfect spot to make the most of the great outdoors.

Another popular spot on the Gulf of Mexico is Tampa Bay, a favourite with anyone who prefers sand and gentle surf

Another northerly city to look out for is St Augustine. Considered to be America's oldest city this hotspot is steeped in history and has a myriad of historic sites and museums to explore.

You may have heard of spring break and if non-stop partying sounds like your idea of fun then take a trip to Florida during March when thousands of students come to relax and have fun. The spring break party spots tend to be Panama City, Daytona Beach and Key West.

Last but not least is Kennedy Space Centre, America's National Launch Pad. If you are in Florida when a flight is scheduled to take off then don't miss it. You can feel the ground shake beneath your feet as the space shuttles launch themselves off into outer space.

When arranging your holidays in Florida it pays to give some thought to which airport is handiest for wherever you want to visit. Florida's busiest airport is Orlando, Miami airport is only eight miles downtown whereas Tampa airport is closer to the idyllic beaches of Florida's Gulf Coast.
