Everything on Earth is dependent on solar energy. All life on our planet would not be able to live without the solar energy that we receive. Plankton, one of the smallest, most simple forms of life on this planet, must have solar energy to develop and live. Most people would agree that the first organisms to die would be plant life if we ran out of solar energy, because they utilize photosynthesis. And if the plants were all gone, all the animals who depend on plants will soon die, and that moves on up the food chain, all the way to us, humans. So, even though we don't run photosynthesis like the plants around us, we are indirectly dependent on the solar radiation from the sun for our food source.
Another interesting fact is that solar energy is 100% environmentally safe because it has no carbon emissions. It also is 100% renewable, it is not going anywhere! It can be utilized for electric production and heat collection all around the world. Currently, solar radiation is used to heat water in solar heating systems, which use the natural sunlight heat to warm up water.
Photovoltaic cells can "magically" turn sunlight into electricity by somewhat complicated scientific processes that I won't get into. The PV panels actually are pretty easy to install. Did you know you can even construct your own set of solar panels?
Did you know that NASA has made an airplane powered exclusively on solar energy? Or that solar powered cars are being created?
