Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, is fast emerging as one of India's prominent IT hubs. According to a report published by the leading online portal, Rediff.com, Trivandrum ranks fourth among the hottest IT destinations in India, after Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. As per the study, Technopark is one of the most sought-after IT hubs in India. The city also boasts world-class institutions such as the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IISST) and the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER).

The Technopark, established in the early 1990s, has undoubtedly transformed the IT scenario in the State, making Thiruvananthapuram one of the important IT hubs in India. Today, Technopark employs over 20,000 IT professionals in 180 odd companies that include some of the world's leading IT giants like the Infosys, Allianz Cornhill and E&Y. Technopark is also home to numerous home-grown companies such as UST Global, IBS, NeST, Suntec and so on. Infosys is also planning to open its new campus on a 50 acre plot adjacent to Technopark. The campus will have Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status and will comprise two separate buildings. Both the buildings will have the capacity to accommodate around 1,500 professionals.

Another major development in the State's IT scene is the establishment of Technocity, a major technology park and integrated township which would come up soon near Technopark. The Technocity would cater mainly to electronics, software, and other IT ventures. The largest technology park and Special Economic Zone in Kerala, Technocity would also be one of the biggest of its kind in the world. The Technocity, which is still under construction, is spread across a vast area of 500 acres and would incorporate not just the space for IT/ITES companies but also residential, commercial, hospitality, medical and educational amenities. The firms In Technocity would include domestic companies as well as subsidiaries of multi-national organizations. The Technocity in Thiruvananthapuram is being jointly developed by the Government of Kerala and private developers. The Technocity is expected to generate around 200,000 employment opportunities, thus giving a significant boost to the State's economy.
