The Himalayas

This article provides valuable information about the youngest mountain ranges of the world. People not only visit Himalayas for adventure or leisure but also for pilgrimage. It has some sacred sites for both Hindus and Buddhist.

Himalayas, one of the greatest attraction of India is renowned worldwide for its spectacular mountain peeks, large glaciers, placid lake, untamed rivers, salubrious climate, rich and diverse flora and fauna.

Himalayan mountain ranges has such an aura that it can charm any traveler with its awesome beauty. This region is not only famous for fantastic hill stations, thrilling adventure zones but also for the pilgrimage sites.

Himalayan mountain ranges are popular as the “abode of God”. According to Hindu mythology, Himalayas is also known as Kailash parbat, which is the home of Lord Shiva and Godess Parvati. In the Hindu mythology, there are number of legends and mythological stories associated with it. This mountain ranges are highly revered by the believer of both Hinduism and Buddhism.

Himalayan mountain ranges were the meditation ground of many ancient and famous Hindu sages like sage Manu, sage Vashist and many more. Every year thousands of devotees visit this sacred land to wash out all their sins and to attain salvation. Of late, Indian Government has started providing some benefits to the pilgrims who wishes to do “Amarnath yatra or Char Dham yatra trip”. Earlier people used to undergo lots of trouble to pay homage to their deity but now the scenario has changed with the development of good routes and various hotels.

Some of the famous pilgrimage destinations in Himalayas are Kailash Mansarovar, the Holy Mountain in Tibet and the Char Dhams that comprises Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri and Muktashwer, Haridwar, Rishikesh. These are the most pious Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. Even Kathmandu in Nepal is also considered as a sacred land for Hindus. Amarnath Caves, which is regarded as one of the holiest place of the Hindus. It is also excellent site for trekking. Another important sacred place in Himalayas is Vaishno Devi, an abode of Indian goddess, perched on the Trikutta hills in the Jammu Kashmir. The most ideal time to visit these destinations is between March and July. Other important temples are the Ban Ganga temple, Bhumika temple, Charan paduka, Chamuda Devi temple, Ardh Kumari temple and the shrine of Shankaracahrya in Jammu and Kasmir.

Some Buddhist pilgrimage destinations in Himalayas are Dharamshala, Lahaul and Spiti, Leh-Ladakh, Zanskar, Gangtok, Rishikesh, Sarahan, Bhutan, Tibet. All these places have some famous monasteries like Thiksay monastery, Takthok Monastery, Takna Monastery, Sumda Chun Monastery, Namgyal Monastery, Nechung Monastery, Gyuto Monastery and Sherbaling Monastery and many more.

Beside Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites, Himalayas houses few revered sites for Muslims as well. Famous mosques that you could locate on Himalayas are Jami Masjid mosque in Ladakh, Hazratbal mosque and Akhoon mulla mosque in Srinagar etc.
