Sponsors for Educational Opportunity is the nation’s premier summer internship program for talented students of color. Since its inception, SEO’s Career Program has placed over 5,000 Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian and Native American students in internships that lead to opportunities in exciting and rewarding careers in the most competitive industries in the world.
The SEO faces many challenges that are specific to its mission. One challenge to mission completion is enhancing the financial acumen of SEO interns for improved productivity and competency prior to the beginning of a summer internship program on Wall Street. Other challenges include providing a cost effective means to educate SEO students around the globe over a short period of time and quantifying the progress and performance of SEO students as they prepare for their internship. Just one example is the Corporate Finance course where corporate financial theory and principles, which both inform and guide capital budgeting, capital structure and dividend decisions are taught.
To address these challenges SEO has created a pre-internship, ten-week training period during which potential interns complete twelve to fourteen Zoologic courses. SEO has introduced potential interns not only to Zoologic courses, but also to ZooFIRST, Zoologic’s just-in-time financial reference tool. Further, Pre-course assessment results are analyzed to identify training curriculum of potential interns. Zoologic courses are incorporated into its SEO-U, created to help first and second year, college students become successful applicants to the SEO Career Program. The Zoologic program has also been expanded to include both its European and Hong Kong programs.
