The Leading Cause of wrecked marriages is Infidelity. However in spite of the enormous hurt that this creates it is possible to turn the tide and survive. If your marriage is to survive then you need to be aware of the common traps that prevent reconciliation.

The humiliation and hurt that is experienced when a partner finds out they're being cheated on can be overwhelming. In the heat of this pain it is all too common for people to act in haste, rushing out and immediately hiring a divorce lawyer. The next phase is to tell friends and family about the infidelity. The long term damage this does is hard to recover from. Your partner now has to mend his relationship with you and with your family and friends. In the middle of this storm of emotions it is far better to slow down and avoid overreacting. Even though you may just want to scream it is better to try and wait until you find some clarity.

The next common trap is to turn to vengeance in the form of a retaliatory affair. It may well feel good for a moment but the implications of betraying your own values can in the long term be disastrous. Using the affair as a weapon to be brought up forever more when you need self validation can make healing the wounds impossible.

In a post infidelity marriage all your idealized notions have been shattered and you need to move into a more realistic outlook if you are to survive together. Above all it means recognizing each others flaws and weaknesses accepting them and not punishing each other for them.
