Choosing a good experiment for your next middle school science project is very important. Try these tips:

  1. Think about things you use everyday. These can include foods you eat, cosmetic things you use, detergent used for clothes or dishes.
  2. Have you ever had a question about how that product does its job? A question is why does toothpaste clean your teeth so well? Can something else, such as baking soda do just as good of a job on your teeth?
  3. Maybe you think about the microwave popcorn you make every night. Does the temperature of the microwave depend on the length of time you cook the popcorn? Why?
  4. Once you have your question you will want to gather the materials needed to do the experiment and write down the procedure you will need to do it. It is important to document how you will go about testing for the science project and follow it precisely.
  5. Now that you have all the materials and have the procedure ready you can actually proceed with doing the experiment. Make sure to document what you do and what happens in each step. Using graph paper can make the project much easier to track.
  6. After completing the project write down what actually happened and your conclusion.

It is also helpful to take pictures of your project in action. It puts more of you into the experiment. You can also use these photos when putting your display together to present at the science fair. With many people owning ipods you can take digital photos and have a slide show on your ipod or your can do this on a laptop. Now not everyone has an ipod or laptop available but there is even a possibility you could borrow a laptop from a friend or teacher just to present the photos during your demonstration and they may feel like they are a part of your project if you involve them just to help with the computer presentation portion of the science fair project.

One of the most important aspects of your middle school science project is to have fun while you do it. Do not make is a chore or a burden. Instead look at it as a fun school learning project that you are not sitting at a desk reading a book. you get to do something interactive.
