Everything seemed to be going so well. You and your boyfriend were together, and there were no worries. And then it happened. He breaks up with you. You can't believe it happened and you didn't see it coming. He says he needs more space. What does that mean?
Well, sometimes they really do need more space, and there are numerous reasons why that may be true. The best thing that you can do in this case is to give him what he wants...space.
Before you give him all that space, do one thing. Write him a hand written note saying that the break-up is probably the best thing for both of you and that you will be fine. And mail the note. This will give him a sense of finality with the breakup, and it may make him stop and think as to whether this is really what he wants.
You know what they say..."we always want what we don't have" and guess what? Now he doesn't have you anymore, and he just got a note from you saying you're okay with it. Well, maybe he's not okay with it.
If he calls you as a result of your note, you have to, as quickly as possible, figure out what he wants at this point. What your looking for here is some sort of commitment. If he says "I want you back" then you apparently can take him back, and all should be well.
Without any sort of commitment, you have got to play "hard to get." Remember, he broke up with you, and so you can play hard to get for a while, but don't over do it. What you are looking for is a commitment of some kind. You will have to decide what kind of commitment your looking for.
What most guys want from their girl is respect. So anytime you have any contact with him, find some way to show him respect. But for a while after that note you sent him, you should not be initiating any contact with him. If he calls you, or you run into him somewhere, be cordial, friendly, and respectful. And try to keep these contacts short...you're playing hard to get...remember? Never appear needy or desperate. Always show confidence and respect.
After some amount of time "away" from him, it's time to explore his interest in a relationship again. Maybe he's given you some signals that he's interested. Maybe he hasn't, but you want to explore it further to see if there is interest. From this point on, the possibilities are almost endless as to what you should do going forward. It all depends upon what his reaction has been to the last step.
