As we all know, fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline provide most of the energy needs of the world today. However, fossil fuel reserves are starting to diminish, and so as a result, their prices are soaring high. More importantly, they pose damaging effects on the environment. For these reasons, alternative sources of electricity and environmentally friendly fuels are now being developed.

There are several types of alternative energy sources, one of which is wind energy. Wind energy is one of the oldest and cleanest forms of energy, and the most developed of the renewable energy sources. There is the potential for a large amount of energy to be produced from wind. Another is hydroelectric power, which is similar to wind energy in that it is very old and well-developed. However, unlike wind energy, its capacity for expansion is limited. Over development and unrestricted harnessing of water power can have devastating effect on the local environment and habitation areas.
Solar energy is another alternative source of electricity. Solar energy is the radiation produced by nuclear fusion reactions deep in the sun's core. Greenhouses and solariums are common examples of the direct use of solar energy, having glass surfaces that allow the passage of visible light from the sun but slow down the escape of heat and infrared energy.
One advantage of using alternative and renewable energy sources is the more sustainable use of finite sources of energy. We can use wind energy, hydroelectric power, or solar energy repeatedly without depleting them. Another advantage is their inability to produce carbon-based warming and polluting agents into the atmosphere.
Alternative sources of electricity may not always be cheap, but if the environmental costs of using fossil fuels are accounted for, renewable energy has, in fact, a lower cost. There are also indirect savings on health and its costs simply because these sources of energy produce no polluting or harmful emissions.
