Solar energy isn’t anything new. The history of solar energy dates back to the ancient Greek time. The Greeks built there homes to face the sun during the winter, in order to advance thin-film photovoltaic’s, which would generate energy directly from the sun.
Romans alike found a great benefit from what it is now called as a passive solar system. This is the use of architecture to take the most advantage of the sun’s ability to heat and light all necessary places in the house.
Even Socrates who was the Greatest Greek philosopher, noted that the architecture of the houses directly affects how the sun penetrates in both summer and winter.
The Romans have developed the solar heating technology by covering building openings from the south, with mica or glass to get the necessary amount of the sun light and heat even in winder.
In the 19th century, Auguste Mouchoute invented the first active solar motor.
The history of solar power continues on. Bell Laboratories scientists Daryl Chapin, Gerald Pearson and Calvin Fuller, created the first silicon solar panel that was able to generate free electricity. The New York Times reported this invention as the “beginning of a new era” in the history of solar power technologies.
It wasn’t until the 1970’s that the new generations of solar systems were created throughout many researches and trials. It was the very period when the prices of oil increased twice overnight and leaders wanted to find a way to stop relying on foreign oil. By the 1990’s, the dream of solar power became more realistic in that the cost had decreased.
So there is a long history of solar energy and there is a lot more to come for us here on earth.
