After Haiti earthquake, the world has become united. Countries are offering aids as per their capacity. In such an action Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said "an impulse to leave the island and to come here." Now, according to Obama’s administration the rules for US immigration are strict, the Haitians and their relatives are in anger due to such policies. US government can be considered as split personality for sure.
The Congress members who are in favor of immigration are putting in pressure on Homeland Security and the State Department to provide relaxation in rules. This situation has inflamed a debate about letting more Haitians to enter US.
To feel the situation some facts are in. About 19,000 applications for US visas are pending. About 55,000 have been granted family visas, still there are on waiting as US Congress has defined the limits on how many to enter per year. Cheryl Little, executive director of the Florida Immigrant Advocacy Center regretted “it can take years and years for families to be reunited”.
A public opinion is framing to let those Haitian to enter US who have their children critically injured and need to be admitted immediately for treatment. Others recommend granting those early who applied before the earthquake and approved at some extent for the USA visa which allows foreign relatives of US citizens or legally permanent residents.
Haiti was already overpopulated due to bad policies and environmental degradation before the quake. It was a place where people used to eat mud to cope with pain of starvation. Port-au-Prince was a place where millions of people lived in earthquake, but as of now about 80% of them are living outside. Helpless Haitians are running short of food aid. They beat food looters to death.
