The Society of Automotive Engineers will be having their World Congress from April 16 to 19 of this year. In connection with that, the FEV Engine Technology Inc. announced that they will be showcasing at the congress their advancements in powertrain technology.

FEV is a manufacturer of engine and powertrain systems for car manufacturers in and around the world. The company which is based in Aachen, Germany is also at the forefront of developing fuel cells for car manufacturers which are in the process of developing fuel cell vehicles. Some of their endeavors resulted in the development of highly efficient gasoline and diesel engines. And with the announcement, it seems that FEV will be adding new and cleaner burning engines to their accomplishments.

This year’s World Congress by the Society of Automotive Engineers will host the unveiling of the latest powertrain technology from FEV. One of the most notable accomplishments that FEV will unveil at the gathering is a developmental alternative fuel engine that is capable of running on E85 - a combination of bio-ethanol and gasoline. The turbocharged direct injection engine will feature the variable compression ratio technology.

With the use of sensors and an onboard computer, the engine can adjust its compression ratio when E85 is being used. This reduces fuel consumption by as much as 25 percent. Being turbocharged and direct injected, the engine is projected to produce the same power as that of a large engine with fuel consumption comparable to smaller engines. The engine might also be enhanced with aftermarket parts such as the Neuspeed cold air intake system.

The FEV will also showcase a UPS truck using hydraulic hybrid technology allowing a reduced amount when it comes to fuel consumption. The vehicle was also presented to President George Bush in late March of this year. The UPS delivery truck uses hydraulic instead of mechanical linkages thus reducing demand on the vehicle’s engine, reducing fuel consumption.

Aside from that, FEV’s accomplishments will be showcased in the Lexus IS 350’s engine which was developed by the German outfit. Another production vehicle will also be showcased at the gathering of engineering professionals in aerospace, automotive and the commercial vehicle industries to showcase FEV’s accomplishments in the development of clean engines. As part of FEV’s exhibit, a Chrysler Sebring will be showcased at the congress.

Aside from the aforementioned technologies, FEV will also unveil their diesel exhaust aftertreatment concept. It is widely known that a diesel engine produces more soot than gasoline engines. With the technology developed by FEV for diesel engines, car manufacturers can meet stricter emission standards set by countries all over the world. It can be remembered that the European Union passed into law a more stringent emission standard for vehicles in the region.
