The Winza ruby is a natural ruby that is classified as being one of the four precious stones. The four precious stones are listed as rubies, emerald, sapphires, and diamonds. At the present time the Winza ruby is limited in supply because it can only be found in Winza. Winza is a remote village in the area of Dodoma, Tanzania and the Winza ruby has only recently been discovered.
It is fairly commonly known that Winza rubies are rare and the continued supply is in question. The Winza ruby gemstone is attracting a lot of attention because of the exceptional brilliance and transparency of the stone. It is most commonly compared to the ruby that was discovered in Vietnam but its value and beauty far outweigh the Vietnam version.
The Winza ruby is such a fantastic gemstone because it is completed totally in nature and does not need the application of heat to bring out its brilliant color. Many dealers and miners fear the Winza ruby is in such limited supply that the supply will be exhausted long before the real potential of the gemstone becomes known. It is this reason, along with the exceptional beauty, that the rich and famous across the world are paying exorbitant prices just to own one of these rare beauties. Many people feel that the Winza ruby will be equal to the Paraiba Tourmaline or Tanzanite in rarity and value.
There are a range of colors in the Winza ruby but usually the size and depth the stone is found is the determining factor in color. Some Winza rubies are a very rich red with tones of blue or purple. Some even have a slight orange hue but these are not as desirable as the ones that are brilliant red. The most sought after color of the Winza ruby is the brilliant red color that can only be found in the Winza mines.
Winza rubies will appear transparent with brilliant clarity. The naked eye should be able to look at the ruby and see the rich red color and the brilliant transparency. This beauty does not require any heat treatment to bring out the rich color. They are usually .01 to 1 carat in size but there are times when 3 carat gemstones are found. These larger stones are the most expensive and the most valuable.
The Winza ruby does not have any enhancements available since Mother Nature gives it the rare beauty it is known for but it can be cut into any of the shapes the traditional ruby is cut. The emerald cut is one of the most desirable and offers the most beauty of all the cuts.
The hardness of gemstones is measured on a scale known as the Mohs scale. The Winza ruby measures 9 on this scale. This makes the stone very strong and it lends itself well to just about any type of jewelry desired. Even though it is fairly hard it does require special care and cleaning. To maintain the brilliance and clarity of the stone one should never expose the stone to harsh cleaning chemicals. It should also never be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner. The best method for cleaning is a mild soap or non-abrasive toothpaste and a soft brush, followed by rinsing under water.
