If you like to discover new music and artists, the internet is the perfect place to explore new possibilities and find new material. The internet has significantly changed the way in which the music industry operates, and more people are now turning to the world-wide-web to search for, listen to, and purchase new singles and albums.

Consumer demand for music is at an all time high, with annual sales of digital music generating billions of pounds each year. The internet offers music lovers access to millions of songs online and has changed the way in which people all over the world listen to music. It is now possible to find and listen to a huge range of music at the touch of a button, and you can usually listen to a song or album before you buy it, helping you to purchase only the music you really like.

You no longer have to purchase a whole album either; you can download songs one at a time so you can listen to a few before deciding on whether you want to buy more. It takes around 30 seconds to download a song with a standard broadband connection, so your access to new music is quick and easy.

You can usually listen to a short preview of a song before purchasing it outright, so you even have a chance to sample a song or album and see if you like the sound of it before you make the final purchase. If you decide you want to download a song or album in full, then the music is yours to keep, meaning you can listen to it whenever and however you want.

To get started with music downloads, you will need a PC or laptop that is connected to the internet. A bandwidth of 256 kb or more is recommended and the greater your bandwidth, the faster you will be able to download new music. You can usually download music effectively via a mobile 3G connection.

Music files can zap free space on your computer, so if you plan to download a lot of songs then you could think about getting a removable storage device, such as an external hard drive. You can also download music to your computer and then transfer it onto your MP3 player, allowing you to listen to music on the go.

There are a number of different types of audio files, the most common being Wave files (wav) and MPEG Layer-3 files (mp3). It is worth checking that the file format you are downloading is compatible with your MP3 player. Most music download websites are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 or later and Windows XP or later, and generally speaking can be used with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Safari browsers.

Remember to use only a reputable website when downloading new music online. There are countless providers of music online, so have a scout around before signing up for a specific service.
