Surrounded by spectacular views of land and sea, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is a one-of-its-kind venue located near the River Yarra in Melbourne. Host to several annual events, the Centre opened in 1996 and has in a short span of 12 years built a flawless reputation with its extra-ordinary services and environmental friendly initiatives.
The MCEC comprises of an exhibition centre, an existing Convention Centre and a new upcoming Convention Centre which is scheduled to be completed and open for business in 2009. The Exhibition Centre is an enviable venue spread across half a kilometre along the Yarra River, providing a column-less floor space of 323,000 square feet. Flexible in nature, the exhibition hall can be divided into smaller halls through movable wall separations positioned at 13 points of the exhibition area. Additionally, the exhibition centre is inclusive of a 493-seat auditorium, various meeting rooms, offices and hospitality suites that add to its functionality.
The existing Convention Centre does not lag behind in terms of flexibility or services. However, it is comparatively small and includes meeting rooms and theatres that can accommodate 40 to 2,000 guests and offers an exhibit space of 21,750 square feet.
The much awaited and upcoming New Melbourne Convention Centre will on completion earn MCEC the honour of being Australia's largest combined exhibition and convention centre. While it will be fully integrated with the Exhibition Centre, it has been contemporarily designed with 18-metre-high glass wall façades facing the Yarra River and a 5,000-seat plenary that can be divided into smaller conference venues.
The new centre will also include 32 conference and meeting rooms. What is most appealing about the new convention centre is that it has made an environmental initiative while ensuring the comfort of delegates and visitors. Also, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre is the first convention centre in the world to achieve a 6 Star Green Star environmental rating.
Attracting over 2 million visitors every year, the MCEC is superbly located in the heart of the central business district of Melbourne, Australia and is easily accessible. At a short distance twenty minutes by car from the Melbourne Airport, the MCEC is surrounded by the city's roadways and freeways that provide for easy access via trams, trains, buses and taxis.
Accommodation in a city that is a major hotspot for tourists and business delegates is easy to find with many reputed hotels offering over 17,000 hotel rooms at close proximity to the MCEC. Visitors and exhibitors can rest assured about getting convenient, hygienic and cost-friendly options, as the city is dotted with hotels.
